JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (July 11, 2019) —  Feeding Northeast Florida, a nonprofit community food bank, announced today that the organization received a $300,000 one-time grant from the Florida Blue Foundation for the new Helping H.A.N.D.S. (Healthy Access to Nutrition and Dietary Services) Program.

The Helping H.A.N.D.S. Program will provide targeted services and interventions that target food insecure populations in Jacksonville’s Northwest neighborhood. The aim is to provide access to free, healthy food and connect clients to other resources that fight food insecurity, defined as being unable to access sufficient and nutritious food for an active life.

“This is a new multi-program initiative that takes all the best practices of other programs, and concentrates them in a ‘mile deep’ approach versus a ‘mile wide’ effort,” said Feeding Northeast Florida Chief Operating Officer & Chief Strategy Officer

Michael Neff. “We’re grateful to the Florida Blue Foundation for this grant, which will help us continue to fight so the most food insecure of our neighbors can truly transform their lives.”

“The Florida Blue Foundation understands that unmet social needs, such as lack of access to healthy food, contribute to poorer health and higher costs,” said Florida Blue Foundation Vice President Susan Towler. “By decreasing food insecurity in communities of need, we can help our neighbors better manage their health.”

The Florida Blue Foundation has partnered with Feeding Northeast Florida and food banks across the state to increase access and affordability of healthy foods. In addition, the Foundation has partnered with Feeding Florida to conduct a food insecurity study to better understand areas of highest need and potential solutions to solving food insecurity in these areas.
