Each year the National Association of Letter Carriers partners with local food banks to carry out the Stamp Out Hunger food drive. The concept is simple. On Saturday, May 14th individuals are encouraged to leave a bag of food donations in your mailbox for your mailman to pick up. These donations are transported back to your local U.S. post office where volunteers from the food bank help to unload, sort, and inspect the donations to make sure that they are safe to be distributed. In our area, this food drive usually brings in enough food to provide 191,000 meals to families, children, seniors, and veterans that struggle with hunger.
How you can Get Involved
Here is a list of our most critical need items that will help your donation make the biggest impact. Please note, we can only accept items that are unopened and no more than 6 months out of expiration. We also cannot accept any homemade jams, jellies, pickled, or home-canned items.
• Canned Meat
• Pasta and Sauce (no glass jars, please!)
• Peanut butter and Jelly
• Mac n Cheese
• Canned fruit and veggies (low sugar and low sodium preferred)
With abundant food donations come volunteer opportunities! Schedule a group to come volunteer the week of May 16- 21 and help us sort and inspect the food donations from this great event! Every box, package, and can has to be inspected so that we can maintain our high food safety standards. Click here to schedule a volunteer shift or for more information!
Your financial investment in this event will help us pay for the equipment and supplies needed to get the food to those that are in need. When you support the food bank, your donation is stretched so that for every $1 donated, we can provide 7 meals. Click here to support Feeding Northeast Florida.
