WHEREAS: Some 322,000 people in Duval County and 16 surrounding counties in Northeast Florida rely on food pantries to sustain their households; and these food banks are supported by Feeding Northeast Florida, among other local organizations; and
WHEREAS: Feeding Northeast Florida, the regional food bank affiliated with Feeding America, bears an estimated cost of $46,000 per day to secure, sort and transport food to the more than 150 food pantries it supports within its service area; and
WHEREAS: PGA Tour and Fed Ex Cup Champion Golfer Billy Horschel has adopted the fight against hunger in Northeast Florida as one of his charitable focuses and is actively supporting Feeding Northeast Florida as part of that ongoing commitment; and
WHEREAS: Horschel raised $9,000 for Feeding Northeast Florida during his recent competition during the PLAYERS Championship and is calling for the community to help raise an additional $37,000 on May 29 to financially ‘Drive Out Hunger’ for a single day in Northeast Florida; and
WHEREAS: Jacksonville remains committed to ensuring the health of all residents, with hunger representing one of the most basic needs of all citizens; and the City of Jacksonville joins Mr. Horschel in helping to meet his goal for the day through increasing awareness and understanding of the fight against hunger, especially on behalf of children and senior citizens who are at-risk of food insecurity in our community.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ALVIN BROWN, by virtue of the authority vested in me as mayor of Jacksonville, Florida, do hereby proclaim May 29, 2015 as
BILLY HORSCHEL’S DRIVE OUT HUNGER DAY
in NORTHEAST FLORIDA
in Jacksonville and encourage all citizens to join me in supporting this inaugural local event in the fight against hunger.
